TRAVEMUENDE, GERMANY-(27-7-2005) They were the first boats out and the last ones in on Wednesday (27 July) at
the 116th Travemuende Week: the fleet of 107 single-handed Contenders
sailing their World Championships on the Bay of Luebeck. In the evening the
scoring board shows the Australian Marcus Hamilton as the new leader of the
gang with three points over German Jan von der Bank. Third is Giovanni
Binzio from Italia.
Von der Bank, surprisingly top scorer of the first day, took `his personal
time off` in race number four when he had a DNF. `I was hit by a strong wind
shift on the wrong side`, explained the 38 years old, `and when I found
myself in the upper 40ies I thought it might my okay to simply give up.`
Hamilton took the chance and fought hard to finish 15th in this strange
race. And with a bullet in the next race he overtook his fellow with 19 to
22 points in total.
Alexander Schlonski (Rostock) won the match races in the finals of the Laser
class. He defeated his German competitor Thomas Reger after Tobias
Schadewaldt and Simon Grotelueschen were disqualified due to pumping. `Nice
format, dramatic racing close to the beach. This is the future of sailing`,
said Schlonski.
The international German offshore champions in the IMS classes remain the
same as in 2004. It was Horst Manns JV 42 `L+M Hispaniola` defending the
title in IMS I after a week full of protests and result corrections. Their
hardest rival, the new Grand Soleigh 42 Racing `Al Cap One III` from Norway,
helmed by former Europe dingy ace Peer Moberg, followed 1.5 points astern.
`They really gave us a hard time on the water`, said `L+M Hispaniola`
tactician Thomas Jungblut, `and sailed very well.` Christian Plums Rodman 42
`Hanseatic Lloyd` came third. The IMS II victory went to Jan Hinrichs Dehler
29 `Lollipop` from Berlin. And brothers Lars and Sven Christensen from
Flensburg were the best IMS III/IV scorer with their X-332 `No Limits`.
